On Screen (Videodrome) No.2, 2024
Oil paint on canvas
100 x 200 cm

This oil painting reimagines a screening of ‘Videodrome’ (David Cronenberg, 1983), a film that envisions a future where humanity is engulfed by video media. The artist mirrors this dystopian vision as a critique of contemporary society’s media dependency. Central to the composition is the iconic scene where the protagonist is consumed by lips on a television screen, set within a retro movie theater. The overexposed, dreamlike visuals evoke a sense of disorientation. At the bottom, two lone figures in the viewer recall ‘A Clockwork Orange’ (Stanley Kubrick, 1974), reinforcing themes of forced spectatorship and subliminal violence. In the upper right corner, two mysterious highlights suggest an external observer, adding a layer of surveillance to the scene, further blurring the line between reality and media illusion.
